`Nay,' answered his Soul, `but she was true to Him she worships, and whose servant she will be ever.'

And when the young Fisherman knew (а когда молодой Рыбак узнал; to know (knew, known)) that he could no longer get rid of his Soul (что он больше не может избавиться от своей Души), and that it was an evil Soul (и что она была злой душой) and would abide with him always (и что она всегда пребудет с ним; to abide — оставаться, пребывать), he fell upon the ground (он упал на землю; to fall (fell, fallen)) weeping bitterly (горько рыдая).

And when it was day (а когда настал день) the young Fisherman rose up (молодой рыбак поднялся; to rise (rose, risen)) and said to his Soul, `I will bind my hands (я свяжу себе руки; to bind — вязать; связывать) that I may not do thy bidding (чтобы я не мог исполнять твои приказания = повиноваться тебе), and close my lips (и закрою свои уста) that I may not speak thy words (чтобы я не мог произносить твои слова), and I will return to the place (и я вернусь на то место; to return — возвращаться, идти обратно) where she whom I love has her dwelling (где жилище той, которую я люблю: «где у той, которую я люблю, есть жилище»). Even to the sea will I return (к самому морю я возвращусь), and to the little bay (и к той небольшой бухте) where she is wont to sing (где она имеет обыкновение петь), and I will call to her (и я позову ее) and tell her the evil I have done (и скажу ей о том зле, что я совершил) and the evil thou hast wrought on me (и о том зле, которое ты разожгла во мне; to work (wrought) up — обрабатывать; возбуждать, разжигать /чувства, страсти/).'

And when the young Fisherman knew that he could no longer get rid of his Soul, and that it was an evil Soul and would abide with him always, he fell upon the ground weeping bitterly.

And when it was day the young Fisherman rose up and said to his Soul, `I will bind my hands that I may not do thy bidding, and close my lips that I may not speak thy words, and I will return to the place where she whom I love has her dwelling. Even to the sea will I return, and to the little bay where she is wont to sing, and I will call to her and tell her the evil I have done and the evil thou hast wrought on me.'

And his Soul tempted him (и его Душа соблазняла/искушала его) and said, `Who is thy love (кто такая твоя любимая) that thou should'st return to her (что ты должен возвращаться к ней)? The world has many fairer than she is (в мире есть много более прекрасных, чем она). There are the dancing-girls of Samaris (есть танцовщицы/баядеры из Самариса) who dance in the manner of all kinds of birds and beasts (которые танцуют в образах различных птиц и зверей; manner — метод; стиль, манера исполнения). Their feet are painted with henna (их ноги раскрашены хной; paint — краска, to paint — красить, раскрашивать), and in their hands they have (и в своих руках они держат: «у них в руках есть») little copper bells (маленькие медные колокольчики). They laugh while they dance (они смеются, пока они танцуют), and their laughter is as clear (и их смех также чист/прозрачен) as the laughter of water (как журчание: «смех» воды).

And his Soul tempted him and said, `Who is thy love that thou should'st return to her? The world has many fairer than she is. There are the dancing-girls of Samaris who dance in the manner of all kinds of birds and beasts. Their feet are painted with henna, and in their hands they have little copper bells. They laugh while they dance, and their laughter is as clear as the laughter of water.

Come with me (пойдем со мной) and I will show them to thee (и я покажу их тебе). For what is this trouble of thine (ибо какое твое беспокойство = зачем тебе беспокоиться; trouble — беспокойство, волнение, тревога) about the things of sin (о грешных делах/поступках; sin — грех; thing — вещь; дело, деяние)? Is that which is pleasant to eat (разве то, что приятно съесть) not made for the eater (не создано для едока)? Is there poison in that (разве есть яд в том) which is sweet to drink (что так сладко выпить)? Trouble not thyself (не беспокойся), but come with me to another city (а пойдем со мной в другой город). There is a little city (есть один небольшой городок) hard by (совсем близко; hard — жесткий; сильно; близко, на небольшом расстоянии) in which there is a garden of tulip-trees (в котором есть сад из тюльпанных деревьев). And there dwell in this comely garden (и в этом прекрасном: «миловидном» саду обитают) white peacocks (белые павлины) and peacocks that have blue breasts (и павлины с синими грудками).

Come with me and I will show them to thee. For what is this trouble of thine about the things of sin? Is that which is pleasant to eat not made for the eater? Is there poison in that which is sweet to drink? Trouble not thyself, but come with me to another city. There is a little city hard by in which there is a garden of tulip-trees. And ever did his Soul tempt him by the way (и всю дорогу его Душа искушала/соблазняла его), but he made it no answer (но он не отвечал ей), nor would he do any of the wickedness (не делал он и тех дурных злодеяний; wicked — злой, порочный, wickedness — злоба, порок; дурной поступок, злодеяние) that it sought to make him to do (которые она пыталась заставить его совершать; to seek (sought) — искать, to seek to do smth. — пытаться, стараться что-либо сделать), so great was the power of the love (так велика была сила любви) that was within him (что была в нем: «внутри него»).

But the young Fisherman answered not his Soul, but closed his lips with the seal of silence and with a tight cord bound his hands, and journeyed back to the place from which he had come, even to the little bay where his love had been wont to sing. And ever did his Soul tempt him by the way, but he made it no answer, nor would he do any of the wickedness that it sought to make him to do, so great was the power of the love that was within him.

And when he had reached the shore of the sea (а когда он достиг берега моря), he loosed the cord from his hands (он отвязал веревку со своих рук; to loose — освобождать; откреплять, отвязывать /лодку, веревку и т.п./), and took the seal of silence from his lips (и снял со своих уст печать молчания; to take (took, taken)), and called to the little Mermaid (и позвал маленькую Русалочку). And his Soul mocked him (и его Душа насмехалась/издевалась над ним) and said, `Surely thou hast but little joy (да уж, действительно, мало тебе радости) out of thy love (от твоей любви). Thou art as one who in time of dearth (ты похож на человека, который во время нужды; thou art = you are; dearth — недостаток, нехватка /продуктов/, голод) pours water into a broken vessel (льет воду в разбитый сосуд; to break (broke, broken) — ломать, разбивать). Thou givest away what thou hast (ты раздаешь то, что ты имеешь; thou givest = you give), and nought is given to thee in return (и ничего не дается тебе взамен; nought — ничто, пустяк; return — возвращение; отдача, возмещение). It were better for thee (тебе было бы лучше: «это было бы лучше для тебя») to come with me (отправиться со мной), for I know where the Valley of Pleasure lies (потому что я знаю, где находится Долина Удовольствий/Наслаждений; to lie — лежать; располагаться, простираться), and what things are wrought there (и какие вещи там творятся/происходят; to work (wrought)).'

And his Soul mocked him and said, `Surely thou hast but little joy out of thy love. Thou art as one who in time of dearth pours water into a broken vessel. Thou givest away what thou hast, and nought is given to thee in return. It were better for thee to come with me, for I know where the Valley of Pleasure lies, and what things are wrought there.'

But the young Fisherman answered not his Soul (но молодой Рыбак не отвечал своей Душе), but in a cleft of the rock (а в расщелине скалы) he built himself a house of wattles (он построил себе дом из прутьев; to build (built)), and abode there for the space of a year (и проживал там целый год: «промежуток времени /длиною/ в год»; to abide (abode, abided) — терпеть; проживать, обитать; space — протяженность; период, промежуток времени). And every morning he called to the Mermaid (и каждое утро звал он Русалочку), and every noon he called to her again (и каждый полдень он снова звал ее) and at night-time he spake her name (и ночью он произносил ее имя; to speak (spoke, арх. spake, spoken). Yet never did she rise out of the sea to meet him (и все же ни разу она не поднялась из моря ему навстречу), nor in any place of the sea (и ни в каком месте в море) could he find her (он не мог найти ее), though he sought for her (хотя он и искал ее; to seek (sought)) in the caves (в пещерах) and in the green water (и в зеленой воде), in the pools of the tide (и в озерцах /остающихся после/ прилива; pool — лужа; прудок) and in the wells (и в колодцах/ключах; well — колодец; родник, ключ, источник) that are at the bottom of the deep (что находятся на самом дне глубины /морской/; bottom — низ, нижняя часть; дно /моря, реки, озера/).
