At the sweet smell of the roasting corn came the starving neighbors, crowding at the door, and crying: "O Kahp-too-óo-yoo! Give us to taste one grain of corn, and then we will go home and die."
But Kahp-too-óo-yoo handed to each an ear, and said:
"Fathers, brothers, go now to your own houses, for there you will find com as much as here." And when they went, it was so. All began to roast corn and to eat; and the dead in the houses awoke and were strong again, and all the village sang and danced.
From that time there was plenty of rain (с того времени было достаточно/много дождя; plenty — изобилие; достаток), for he who had the power of the clouds (ведь тот, кто обладал силой над тучами) was at home again (был дома снова). At the beginning of things (на заре мира: «в начале всех вещей»), He-who-was-first-Created (Тот-кто-был-первым-Сотворен = Созданный Первым) found himself living alone (обнаружил себя живущим в одиночку = понял, что существует один). The earth was here before him (земля была здесь перед ним), clothed in green grass and thick forests (одетая зеленой травой и густыми лесами), and peopled with the animal tribes (и заселенная стадами животных; to people — заселять, населять; tribe — племя; клан, род; семейство; поколение). Then all these spoke one language (тогда все говорили на одном языке; these — эти; to speak), and the Lonely One was heralded by them (и они разносили весть об Одиноком; to herald — возвещать, разносить весть о ком-либо, чем-либо; herald — герольд; глашатай) everywhere as he roamed (везде, где он бродил) to and fro over the world (туда-сюда по миру; to and fro), both upon dry land (и на суше: «и на сухой земле») and in the depths of the sea (и в глубинах моря).

One day (однажды), when he returned to his teepee from a long wandering (когда он вернулся в свой вигвам из далекого путешествия; to wander — бродить, странствовать, скитаться; teepee, tepee — вигвам индейцев), he felt a pain in his left foot (он почувствовал боль в своей левой ступне; to feel), and discovered a splinter in the great toe (и обнаружил занозу в большом пальце)! Drawing out the splinter (вытаскивая занозу), he tossed it upward (он бросил ее вверх; upward/s/ — наречие, указывает на "восходящее" направление или изменение) through the smoke-hole of the lodge (через отверстие для дыма в вигваме; lodge — /маленькое помещение, часто — для служебных целей, могущее служить временным пристанищем для кого-л./; домик; сторожка у ворот; палатка индейцев, вигвам). He-who-was-first-Created at once came forth and took up the infant, who was the Boy Man, the father of the human race here upon earth.
Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished (ну а маленький Юный Человек рос и развивался: «процветал»), and was perfectly happy (и был полностью счастлив) under the wise guidance of his friend (под мудрым руководством своего друга; to guide — вести, быть чьим-либо проводником; руководить) and Elder Brother (и Старшего Брата). Although he had neither father nor mother (хотя у него не было ни отца, ни матери; neither… nor — ни… ни), and only animals for playmates (и только звери в товарищи по играм; mate — товарищ, партнер), it is said that no child born of human parents (говорят, что ни один ребенок, рожденный человеческими родителями) has ever led so free and happy a life as he (/никогда не/ вел такой свободной и счастливой жизни, как он; to lead). In those days (в те дни = в то время), there was peace between the animals and the Boy Man (был мир между животными и Юным Человеком).

Sometimes they challenged him to friendly contests, whereupon He-who-was-first-Created taught his little brother how to outwit them by clever tricks and devices. This he was often able to do; but not always; for sometimes the animals by their greater strength finally overcame him.

He-who-was-first-Created now turned himself into a King-fisher (Созданный Первым тогда превратился в Верховного Пекана[7]), and so approached unsuspected (и таким образом приблизился незаподозренным; to suspect —подозревать) and talked with the old Beaver-woman (и побеседовал со старой Женщиной-Бобром). From her he learned (от нее он узнал) that his younger brother had been enticed into the Great Water (что его младшего брата заманило в Великую Воду: «был заманен в…»; to entice — соблазнять; переманивать) and destroyed by the monster of the deep (и уничтожило/убило чудовище глубин: «и убит чудовищем…»; deep — глубокий), Unk-tay-hee (Унк-тэй-хи). Thereupon he went down to the shore (тогда он спустился к берегу; thereupon — вслед за тем) and changed himself into a tall pine (и превратился: «изменил себя» в высокую сосну) overlooking the lake (возвышающуюся над озером; to overlook — возвышаться /над городом, местностью и т. п./)
