Ray Bradbury -
"Fine (прекрасно). Welcome home (добро пожаловать домой)!"
Travis did not relax (не расслабился). He seemed to be looking through the one high window
"Okay, Eckels, get out (выходите). Don't ever come back (никогда не возвращайтесь)." Eckels could not move (не двигался).
"You heard me (вы меня слышали)," said Travis. "What're you staring at (на что вы уставились)?"
1999.2000.2055.
The Machine stopped.
"Get out," said Travis.
The room was there as they had left it. But not the same as they had left it. The same man sat behind the same desk. But the same man did not quite sit behind the same desk. Travis looked around swiftly. "Everything okay here?" he snapped.
"Fine. Welcome home!"
Travis did not relax. He seemed to be looking through the one high window.
"Okay, Eckels, get out. Don't ever come back." Eckels could not move.
"You heard me," said Travis. "What're you staring at?"
Eckels stood smelling of the air (стоял, нюхая воздух), and there was a thing to the air (и в воздухе что-то было), a chemical taint so subtle, so slight (химическая примесь такая незначительная, такая небольшая: taint — пятно, оттенок), that only a faint cry of his subliminal senses warned him it was there (что только слабый возглас его подсознательных чувств предостерегал его, что она там была). The colors, white, gray, blue, orange (цвета, белый, серый, синий, оранжевый), in the wall, in the furniture, in the sky beyond the window, were (на стене, на мебели, на небе за окном были) … were … And there was a feel His flesh twitched (его тело дрожало). His hands twitched. He stood drinking the oddness with the pores of his body Somewhere, someone must have been screaming one of those whistles that only a dog can hear His body screamed silence in return Beyond this room, beyond this wall, beyond this man (за этой комнатой, за этой стеной, за этим человеком) who was not quite the same man seated at this desk that was not quite the same desk (который был не совсем тем же человеком, сидящим за письменным столом, который был не совсем тем же столом) … lay an entire world of streets and people (лежал целый мир улиц и людей). What sort of world it was now, there was no telling He could feel them moving there, beyond the walls (он мог чувствовать, как они двигаются там, за стенами), almost, like so many chess pieces blown in a dry wind (почти как шахматные фигурки, уносимые сухим ветром: so many — столько, chess — шахматы, piece — кусок, штука, шахматная фигура) …

But the immediate thing was the sign painted on the office wall (но немедленно бросалась в глаза вывеска, нарисованная на стене офиса: immediate — немедленный), the same sign he had read earlier today on first entering (та же самая вывеска, которую он прочитал сегодня раньше, в /свой/ первый приход). Somehow (так или иначе, почему-то), the sign had changed (вывеска изменилась):
TYME SEFARI INC.
SEFARIS TU ANY YEER EN THE PAST.
YU NAIM THE ANIMALL.
WEE TAEK YU THAIR.
YU SHOOT ITT.
Eckels felt himself fall into a chair He fumbled crazily at the thick slime on his boots He held up a clod of dirt, trembling (дрожа, он показал комок грязи: to hold up — выставлять, показывать), "No, it can't be (этого не может быть). Not a little thing like that (не из-за такой же маленькой вещи, как эта). No!"
Embedded in the mud (втоптанная в грязь: to embed — вставлять, вмуровывать), glistening green and gold and black, was a butterfly (сияющая зеленым, золотым и черным, лежала бабочка), very beautiful and very dead (очень красивая и совершенно мертвая).
"Not a little thing like that (не такая малость)! Not a butterfly!" cried Eckels.
It fell to the floor (она упала на пол), an exquisite thing, a small thing that could upset balances (изящная, маленькая вещица, которая смогла нарушить равновесие: to upset — опрокинуть) and knock down a line of small dominoes and then big dominoes and then gigantic dominoes (и опрокинуть ряд маленьких костяшек домино, а потом больших, а потом гигантских), all down the years across Time (сквозь года вдоль времени: down the years — сквозь года). Eckels' mind whirled (закружилась голова, мысли спутались: to whirl — кружиться). It couldn't change things Killing one butterfly couldn't be that important Could it?

His face was cold His mouth trembled, asking (рот задрожал, спрашивая): "Who — who won the presidential election yesterday (кто выиграл президентские выборы вчера)?"
The man behind the desk laughed "You joking (вы шутите)? You know very well (вы /сами/ знаете очень хорошо). Deutscher, of course! Who else (кто же еще)? Not that fool weakling Keith (не тот же глупый слабак Кейт: weak — слабый, weakling — слабый человек). We got an iron man now, a man with guts (мы заполучили железного человека, человека с характером: guts — кишки, сила воли, характер /в русском языке, наоборот, говорят «кишка тонка»/)!" The official stopped (служащий остановился). "What's wrong (что не так)?"
Eckels moaned (застонал). He dropped to his knees He scrabbled at the golden butterfly with shaking fingers (он хватался за золотистую бабочку трясущимися пальцами: to scrabble — карабкаться, цепляться). "Can't we," he pleaded to the world, to himself, to the officials, to the Machine (умолял он мир, сам себя, служащих, Машину), "can't we take it back, can't we make it alive again (не можем ли мы отнести ее назад, снова оживить: «сделать живой»)? Can't we start over (не можем ли мы начать сначала)? Can't we —"
He did not move Eyes shut, he waited, shivering He heard Travis breathe loud in the room (он слышал, как Тревис громко дышит в комнате); he heard Travis shift his rifle (он слышал, как Тревис перекладывает ружье: to shift — двигать), click the safety catch (нажимает на предохранитель), and raise the weapon (и поднимает ружье).
