Легко заметить, что поэтическая теория Эдгара По ставила жесткие ограничения возможностям поэта. Поэзия обретала черты замкнутой, обособленной сферы, из которой исключались социальный и нравственный опыт людей и, соответственно, понятия истины, долга, ответственности и т. п. Выход поэтического творчества за пределы эмоционально-эстетической задачи был категорически закрыт.
Не потому ли гениальный поэт Эдгар Аллан По написал так мало стихов, что его интеллект, опыт, богатое творческое сознание не могли получить адекватного выражения в поэтическом творчестве? Его взгляд на природу поэзии и ее функцию не допускал этого. Еще в начале пути он начертал красивые слова, которые, увы, оказались для его творчества пророческими: «Если и существует некий круг идей, отчетливо и ощутимо выделяющийся посреди клокочущего хаоса умственной деятельности человечества, – это вечнозеленый, сияющий рай, который доступен истинному поэту, и лишь ему одному, как ограниченная сфера его власти, как тесно замкнутый Эдем его мечтаний и сновидений».[18]

Kind solace in a dying hour!
Such, father, is not (now) my theme —
I will not madly deem that power
Of Earth may shrive me of the sin
Unearthly pride hath revell’d in —
I have no time to dote or dream:
Yo u call it hope – that fire of fire!
It is but agony of desire:
If I can hope – Oh God! I can —
Its fount is holier – more divine —
I would not call thee fool, old man,
But such is not a gift of thine.
Know thou the secret of a spirit
Bow’d from its wild pride into shame.
О yearning heart! I did inherit
Thy withering portion with the fame,
The sering glory which hath shone
Amid the Jewels of my throne,
Halo of Hell! and with a pain
Not Hell shall make me fear again —
O craving heart, for the lost flowers
And sunshine of my summer hours!
The undying voice of that dead time,
With its interminable chime,
Rings, in the spirit of a spell
Upon the emptiness – a knell.

Burn’d with a still intenser glow

In woman’s weakness had a part.

The loveliness of loving well!

The more than beauty of a face

O, she was worthy of all love!

Were incense – then a goodly gift,
For they were childish and upright —
Pure – as her young example taught:
