The four travelers passed through the rest of the forest in safety, and when they came out from its gloom saw before them a steep hill, covered from top to bottom with great pieces of rock.

"That will be a hard climb," said the Scarecrow, "but we must get over the hill, nevertheless." So he led the way and the others followed. They had nearly reached the first rock when they heard a rough voice cry out, "Keep back!"

"Who are you (кто ты)?" asked the Scarecrow.

Then a head showed itself over the rock and the same voice said (затем над скалой показалась голова, и тот же голос сказал), "This hill belongs to us (этот холм принадлежит нам), and we don't allow anyone to cross it (и мы никому не разрешаем переходить через него)."

"But we must cross it (но мы должны перейти через него)," said the Scarecrow. "We're going to the country of the Quadlings (мы направляемся в страну Кводлингов)."

"But you shall not (но вы через него не пройдете)!" replied the voice (ответил тот же голос), and there stepped from behind the rock the strangest man the travelers had ever seen (и из-за скалы вышел самый странный человек, которого путешественники когда-либо видели; step — шаг; to step — ступать, шагать, делать шаг).

He was quite short and stout (он был довольно низкорослым и тучным; short — короткий, недлинный; низкий, невысокий; stout — крепкий, плотный; дородный, полный) and had a big head, which was flat at the top (и у него была большая голова с плоской макушкой: «которая была плоской на макушке») and supported by a thick neck full of wrinkles (и которая поддерживалась толстой морщинистой шеей: «шеей, полной морщин»).

"Who are you?" asked the Scarecrow.

Then a head showed itself over the rock and the same voice said, "This hill belongs to us, and we don't allow anyone to cross it."

"But we must cross it," said the Scarecrow. "We're going to the country of the Quadlings."

"But you shall not!" replied the voice, and there stepped from behind the rock the strangest man the travelers had ever seen.

He was quite short and stout and had a big head, which was flat at the top and supported by a thick neck full of wrinkles.

The Lion became quite angry at the laughter caused by the Scarecrow's mishap, and giving a loud roar that echoed like thunder, he dashed up the hill.

Again a head shot swiftly out, and the great Lion went rolling down the hill as if he had been struck by a cannon ball.

Dorothy ran down and helped the Scarecrow to his feet, and the Lion came up to her, feeling rather bruised and sore, and said, "It is useless to fight people with shooting heads; no one can withstand them."

"What can we do, then (что же нам тогда делать: «что же мы можем сделать»)?" she asked.

"Call the Winged Monkeys (позвать Крылатых Обезьян)," suggested the Tin Woodman (предложил Железный Дровосек). "You have still the right to command them once more (у тебя все еще есть право приказать им еще один раз)."

"Very well (очень хорошо)," she answered (ответила она), and putting on the Golden Cap she uttered the magic words (и, надев Золотую Шапку, она произнесла магические слова; to utter — издавать звук; произносить). The Monkeys were as prompt as ever (Обезьяны были также проворны, как всегда), and in a few moments the entire band stood before her (и через несколько мгновений уже вся стая стояла перед ней).

"What are your commands (каковы будут твои приказания)?" inquired the King of the Monkeys, bowing low (спросил Король Обезьян, низко кланяясь).

"Call the Winged Monkeys," suggested the Tin Woodman. "You have still the right to command them once more."

"Very well," she answered, and putting on the Golden Cap she uttered the magic words. The Monkeys were as prompt as ever, and in a few moments the entire band stood before her.

"What are your commands?" inquired the King of the Monkeys, bowing low.

"Carry us over the hill to the country of the Quadlings (перенесите нас над этим холмом, /и отнесите/ в страну Кводлингов)," answered the girl.

"It shall be done (будет сделано)," said the King (сказал Король), and at once the Winged Monkeys caught the four travelers and Toto up in their arms (и тут же Крылатые Обезьяны подхватили четырех путешественников и Тото на руки) and flew away with them (и улетели с ними прочь).

As they passed over the hill the Hammer-Heads yelled with vexation (когда они пролетали над холмом, Молоткоголовые завопили от досады; to pass over — проходить; переправляться; пролетать), and shot their heads high in the air (и стали стрелять своими головами высоко в воздух), but they could not reach the Winged Monkeys (но они не могли достать Крылатых Обезьян), which carried Dorothy and her comrades safely over the hill (которые благополучно перенесли Дороти и ее спутников над холмом) and set them down in the beautiful country of the Quadlings (и опустили их на землю в прекрасной стране Кводлингов).

"This is the last time you can summon us (это /был/ последний раз, когда ты могла вызвать нас)," said the leader to Dorothy (сказал вожак Дороти); "so good-bye and good luck to you (поэтому прощай и удачи тебе)."

"It shall be done," said the King, and at once the Winged Monkeys caught the four travelers and Toto up in their arms and flew away with them.

As they passed over the hill the Hammer-Heads yelled with vexation, and shot their heads high in the air, but they could not reach the Winged Monkeys, which carried Dorothy and her comrades safely over the hill and set them down in the beautiful country of the Quadlings.

"This is the last time you can summon us," said the leader to Dorothy; "so good-bye and good luck to you."

"Good-bye, and thank you very much (прощайте, и спасибо вам большое)," returned the girl; and the Monkeys rose into the air (и Обезьяны поднялись в воздух) and were out of sight in a twinkling (и скрылись из вида в мгновение ока; twinkling — мерцание, мигание; мгновение, миг).

The country of the Quadlings seemed rich and happy (страна Кводлингов казалась богатой и счастливой). There was field upon field of ripening grain (/вокруг расстилались/ поля за полями созревающих злаков; ripe — зрелый, созревший, спелый /о фруктах, зерне и т. п./; to ripen — зреть, созревать), with well-paved roads running between (между /полями/ бежали = тянулись хорошо вымощенные дороги), and pretty rippling brooks (и /протекали/ прелестные журчащие ручьи) with strong bridges across them (через которые были /перекинуты/ крепкие мосты).

The fences and houses and bridges were all painted bright red (заборы, дома и мосты были выкрашены в ярко-красный цвет), just as they had been painted yellow in the country of the Winkies (так же, как они были выкрашены в желтый в стране Винки) and blue in the country of the Munchkins (и в голубой в стране Манчкинов). The Quadlings themselves, who were short and fat (и сами Кводлинги, которые были невысокого роста и толстенькими) and looked chubby and good-natured (и выглядели круглолицыми и добродушными), were dressed all in red (были одеты во все красное), which showed bright against the green grass and the yellowing grain (и ярко выделялись на фоне зеленой травы и желтеющих злаков; to show — показывать; быть видным, казаться; against — прямо напротив, лицом к; на фоне; to yellow — желтеть).
