Кроме веры в существование злых духов, призраков, ведьм и эльфов в викторианском фольклоре большую роль играли праздничные и профессиональные суеверия, магические способы исцеления и предсказания судьбы. Иногда кажется, что без знания фольклора викторианец и шагу не мог ступить из дома. Впрочем, светские условности осложняли жизнь не меньше, чем пережитки прошлого.

Одного у викторианцев не отнять — их любовь к традициям, обрядам и ритуалам была сдобрена здоровой порцией национального юмора, жизнелюбием и умением противостоять любым неприятностям.

Может, без этого мы никогда и не взялись за нашу книгу — нам очень хотелось передать в ней тот позитив, который британцы XIX века черпали из своего фольклора даже в самых печальных обстоятельствах.
